When the Body Forgets How to Exhale

By Jacqui Parshall, Founder & Leadership Navigator

We don’t talk enough about what constant stimulation does to us. The notifications. The noise. The emotional labour. The decision fatigue. The quiet pressure to always respond, always perform, and always hold everything together.

For a lot of women – especially those carrying a demanding career alongside everything else – it builds so gradually you stop noticing. Until one day you realise your body has forgotten how to fully exhale.

You can call it stress, or burnout, or “just life.” But underneath the language is something physiological: a nervous system stuck in overdrive. Always on. Always scanning. Always braced for the next thing. In real estate, where the days are long and you are expected to be endlessly available, that state can quietly become your baseline.

And then you step into a paddock

A horse does not care about your deadlines, your phone, your title or your to-do list. A horse responds to one thing: your internal state.

If you are rushed, they are alert. If you are anxious, they are uncertain. If you are calm, they soften. There is no performing your way around it – they read the truth of how you are actually doing, and they reflect it straight back.

So the body has little choice but to downshift. Your breathing slows before your thoughts do. Your shoulders drop before your mind catches up. Your attention leaves the noise and returns to the present – because the present is the only place a horse ever lives.

This is co-regulation

Every time you move from wound-up to settled in the presence of a horse, your nervous system is rehearsing a new pathway – practising the shift out of survival mode and back into steadiness. Not through force. Not through another strategy to add to the pile. Through connection.

It is also why insight lands so differently here than in a workshop. Horses make the invisible visible. The patterns you cannot see in yourself – how you handle pressure, where your boundaries slip, what happens to your presence when you are stretched thin – show up honestly, in real time, and without judgement.

Why this matters for the way you lead

You cannot lead others well from a nervous system that never gets to rest. Calm is not a soft skill; it is the ground everything else stands on – clearer decisions, cleaner boundaries, steadier communication, and the capacity to be genuinely present with a client, a colleague, or your own family.

Learning to regulate yourself is not stepping away from your ambition. It is stepping back into it with more energy, more clarity, and more of you available for the things that matter most.
